malone’s eye on the outside
“Why the hell is a South African introducing Romania’s most exciting new label?” I hear you ask.

Well, the first and rather obvious reason is that Mesmer asked me to.
For the past three years he’s been kind enough to swing every one of his creations my way, often mere hours after their completion. As such I’ve been a close witness to his well-deserved rise in prominence, and have long hoped he would start his own label, because I always knew it would kick ass.

The second reason is simply that I’ve got a good view from here.
You may think it’s a curse to be isolated all the way down on the southern tip of Africa, but in musical terms it’s always afforded me an objective outlook on worldwide breakbeat.

For well over a decade I’ve watched its development across the globe: from the glitchy, twisted style of the Americans to the fanatical character of the Spanish, the continued excellence of the British (despite their constant worry that breaks is disappearing before their very eyes), the sublime talent of the Australians, and the recent rise of the Russians. And, of course, the outstanding work of the eastern Europeans, which brings us right back here to Scarcity Records.

Over the coming months and years (in truth, I hope it’s forever), Scarcity Records will be presenting you with a host of releases from a number of great producers.
While they may differ in style, they all have one thing in common: quality.
And while label boss Mesmer certainly has a soft spot for nurturing talent in his own country, his vision stretches well beyond that, to all the regions I’ve mentioned above.

For my part, just think of me as an observer. And a very excited one at that.

Until next time...
